Explore movement and forces while discovering the six basic types of simple machines. Learn all about the lever and inclined plane families through hands-on activities and demonstrations. Examine past and current examples of how simple machines make work easier. Then, play a game during a virtual tour of the museum’s exhibitions.

This program is offered virtually via Zoom. We have implemented the following measures to ensure that our virtual programming is safe and secure:

  • Waiting room to prevent uninvited guests from joining the meeting
  • Controls in place to control if and when students can chat and share content
  • End-to-end encryption to ensure proper security
  • Recording of program is not permitted by any party

Curriculum links

This program will cover the following curriculum related topics and themes across a range of grade levels. The content can be adapted based on the needs of the group.

Simple machines: There are six types of simple machines that help to move objects and help change the direction of the force. Mechanisms are made up of one or more simple machines. Structures: Simple machines are affected by the materials used and the forces acting on them.Forces and movement: Simple machines allow humans to move objects with less force than would otherwise be needed. Simple machines can transfer forces that cause objects to speed up, slow down, or change direction.Simple machines are tools that have been used for thousands of years to make life easier and more enjoyable for humans. They are still important in many everyday objects. Types of tools can vary between different cultures around the world.

Fees

$140 per session. We request a maximum of 30 students or one classroom per session, in order maximize the educator’s ability to interact with your students.

Discovering states of matter

Students will examine the shape-shifting abilities of matter and the processes that allow matter to transition between these states.

In this program, students investigate the composition of soil, meet its inhabitants, learn about its food chain and discover why soil is the foundation of life.

Students will discover how technologies expand the possibilities of art and design while creating their own artwork for a laser-cut pin.
