Discovering states of matter

Grade level:
Grade 2 to 5 (Ontario)
Elementary cycle 1 to 2 (Quebec)
Fee:
$140
Duration:
60 minutes

Dates offered: September 15, 2024 to August 29, 2025

Max. group size: 30

Everything around us is made of matter. Matter has shape-shifting abilities that allow it to take the form of liquids, solids, and gasses. Students will examine different states of matter, as well as the processes that allow matter to transition between these states.

This program is offered virtually via Zoom. We have implemented the following measures to ensure that our virtual programming is safe and secure:

  • Waiting room to prevent uninvited guests from joining the meeting
  • Controls in place to control if and when students can chat and share content
  • End-to-end encryption to ensure proper security
  • Recording of program is not permitted by any party

This program will cover the following curriculum-related topics and themes across a range of grade levels. The content can be adapted, based on the needs of the group.
MatterStates of matter
Properties of matter: Everything is made of matter. Matter is made up of tiny particles and can exist in different forms.Differences in states of matter: Differences in appearance, feel and behaviour of solids, liquids and gases.
Conservation of matter: Matter can change form but not be created or destroyed.Particle theory: Particles are always moving. Their speed determines the state of the matter.
Changes in stateBuoyancy
Changes in states: Effect of temperature on states of matter. Processes of freezing, melting, evaporating and condensing.Relative density and buoyancy: Effect of density on an object or liquid’s ability to float.
