Canada Aviation and Space Museum is

proud of our newest exhibition that

takes visitors on a journey through one

of the most defining chapters of our

global history the Cold War bursting

with rare artifacts and iconic aircraft

the exhibition offers insight into a

time of Social and technological change

in Canada in the Royal Canadian Air

Force and in the personal stories behind

the headlines the Cold War exhibition

showcases the magic that happens when

collaboration and expertise converge we

have brought together Partners from

across Academia government the Canadian

Forces and the Aerospace sector who have

helped us create an interactive and

engaging examination of this fascinating

time period and with over 70% of the

museum collection representing rural

Canadian Air Force history we are

honoured to launch this exhibition during

our Air Force’s Centennial year in

preparation for this exhibition our team

is devoted extensive time and planning

to the relocation of aircraft within our

Museum and Reserve hanger we have also

worked with designers and partners to

create Hands-On learning opportunities

with new digital touch screens and the

Museum’s first immersive experience a

recreated fallout shelter the museum is

grateful to have worked with people who

through their personal narratives

contribute to the richness of this

exhibition we’ve worked hand in hand with

individuals whose stories have often

remain

untold. I’m extraordinarily honoured but I

also feel very responsible to make sure

that I am telling my story as earnestly

and accurately as I can and that I

represent all of those other people who

will never have their voice that I

unique opportunity to understand the

complexities of the time period and its

lasting impact on our country and our

The Cold War was a volatile period marked by international tensions, espionage and the threat of nuclear attack—but it was also a time of great technological and social change in the Royal Canadian Air Force, throughout Canada and around the world.

Journey through the tumultuous era that defined global geopolitics for just over half a century. Marvel at rare artifacts and iconic Cold War aircraft, engage with interactive displays and discover the personal stories behind the headlines in this thought-provoking and enlightening exhibition.

Exhibition highlights

  • Explore a replica basement fallout shelter and consider what supplies you might need for a two-week stay
  • Gain insight into spy communications and see if you have what it takes to decode an encrypted message
  • Take a digital tour of a Distant Early Warning Line Station, a radar station designed to detect an incoming invasion
