Grade level:
Grade 3 to 10 (Ontario)
Elementary cycle 2 to Secondary cycle 2 (Quebec)
Fee:
$170

60 minutes

Dates offered: September 16, 2025 to August 28, 2026

Design technologies have expanded the possibilities of art and design. In this program, students will discover how technologies like 3D printers and laser cutters take a digital design and produce a physical product or piece of art. Your students will be able to create their own designs for a laser cut pin which will be cut and engraved at the museum, and then shipped to your school.

This program is offered virtually via Zoom. We have implemented the following measures to ensure that our virtual programming is safe and secure:

  • Waiting room to prevent uninvited guests from joining the meeting
  • Controls in place to control if and when students can chat and share content
  • End-to-end encryption to ensure proper security
  • Recording of program is not permitted by any party

Curriculum links

This program will cover the following curriculum-related topics and themes across a range of grade levels. The content can be adapted, based on the needs of the group.
MatterEnergy
Materials: Properties of materials used in design technologies to create different objects or products.Forms and transformation of energy: Energy used to transform material to produce the product. Electrical energy is transformed into other forms of energy in design technologies.
Physical and chemical changes: Changes in the material used to create the final product.Light: Use of light energy to produce enough heat to burn material in a laser cutter.
ProcessOther
Communication: Clarity and precision of communication and instructions when working with digital technologies.Design software: Software that can be used to create designs for technologies, such as 3D printers and laser cutters.
Creativity: Creating designs for technologies like 3D printers and laser cutters.
Problem solving and iterative design: Finding solutions to issues that arise during the design process. Reasoning to determine the modifications necessary to produce the desired product.
