Field trip planning tips

Get ready for an amazing trip to the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum with these tips to get the most out of your visit!

The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum is a working farm on the site of the Canadian Experimental Farm. As such, there are particular recommendations for your school regarding arrival, parking, accessibility, meals, and more. Read on for information to set you and your class up for a rewarding visit!

Preliminary visit

Want to explore ahead of your class trip?

After confirming an upcoming reservation, group leaders are encouraged to take a preliminary visit to familiarize themselves with the museum. This is free of charge for group leaders, upon presentation of a confirmation letter or valid educator ID.

Arrival

We ask that all groups be dropped off in the museum parking lot, off Prince of Wales Drive (south of the traffic circle and north of Baseline). All groups board their buses at the same place. Your group will be greeted by a museum educator who will then review safety rules (except for self-guided visits).

Parking

The museum offers paid, on-site parking, with registration of your license plate. Parking is free for buses but parking fees apply for other vehicles.

Payment

You will be asked for your booking information and an accurate head count upon arrival. Payment can be made by cash, debit, credit, or cheque (made payable to the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum).

Chaperones

Chaperones are responsible for their group and for the individuals in that group. Individuals not respecting our code of conduct will be removed from their group; a chaperone will be required to remain with them until the time of departure. The principal of the school will be informed.

If you wish to have additional adults accompany your class, additional fees will apply.

The following minimum ratios for student supervision (by adults) are required when visiting the museum:

Youth ages 14 and under 6 youths: 1 adult
Youth ages 15 to 1710 youths: 1 adult

Code of conduct

For the comfort and enjoyment of everyone, please ensure that your students and parent chaperones:

  • Walk at all times
  • Remain with the group at all times
  • Remain on the public side of the barriers that protect our artifacts and farm animals
  • Eat, drink, and chew gum only in designated areas
  • Refrain from feeding or handling the farm animals or equipment (unless this is part of the program)
  • At all times conduct themselves in a way which is respectful and will not cause injury to themselves, their fellow visitors, museum staff and farm animals

The museum is a working farm

We ask that visitors dress appropriately, and heed the safety guidelines outlined below. Please keep in mind the potential hazards associated with large farm animals and working farm equipment. For your safety, please ensure all participants thoroughly wash or sanitize their hands after visiting each group of animals. Please note that teachers and chaperones must remain with their group(s) at all times.

Allergen alert

Please be aware that there are a variety of allergens present at the museum including dust, hay, animals and insects. There are also potential allergens in the foods served in the demonstration kitchen and available in vending machines. Group leaders and chaperones are responsible for ensuring that they are aware of the allergies of the youth participants in their group. We recommend not allowing youth participants to consume food products served or purchased at the museum unless the chaperones are certain that none of the participants have food allergies.

Accessibility

The museum is committed to providing accessible programming. Please let us know if your group has any special needs, and we will be happy to discuss specific accommodations.

First aid

First aid is provided by museum staff. A chaperone must remain with their charge at all times in the first aid room.

Picnic lunches

From May through mid-October, the museums large outdoor area is equipped with tents and picnic tables to accommodate groups staying for lunch. From mid-October to April, there is a small indoor lunch area but space is quite limited.

Name tags

For guided programs, please make name tags for your students which can be easily read by our educators. This will help them to quickly build a rapport with your class.

Spend more time at the museum

You are welcome to explore the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum’s exhibitions and barns at your leisure until the arranged time of your departure or until 5 p.m., whichever comes first.

Please note groups may not have access to the Demonstration Kitchen during busy periods.

Cancellation

Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance. A $30 cancellation fee applies unless the program is rescheduled within the same school year. Cancellations with less than 48 hours notice are subject to an $100 cancellation fee. In the case of bus cancellations due to inclement weather, fees are waived if the program is rescheduled in the same school year.
