Inside the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum’s barn, a woman and a young girl stand near the cows. The girl excitedly points at them, her face lit with curiosity. Nearby, a baby watches while the girl walks around, explores, eagerly taking in her surroundings.

Dairy Barn

Ongoing

Built in 1914, our historic Dairy Barn is home to more than 50 dairy cattle. Learn how we keep our cows healthy, what it takes to run a dairy operation, and how milk finds its way from our cows to your table.

Each day at 4 p.m., visitors can watch our milking machines in action. Be sure to peek into the milk room to see where milk is stored before it’s processed and distributed to grocery stores like yours.

Our dairy herd is made up of the six most common dairy breeds in Canada: Holstein, Brown Swiss, Jersey, Ayrshire, Guernsey and Milking Shorthorn. Plus, see the Canadienne, a rare breed and the only dairy breed that was developed in North America.

Don’t forget to make a stop at the barn’s maternity ward, where you can visit with expectant mothers waiting to give birth. Plus, be sure to visit our adorable calves in the newborn area of the barn!

An adult in a blue shirt holds a tube with several attachments. The room is predominately stainless steel, with a large vat to the left and tubing along the right side of the room.

Milk room

The milk room is located in the west corner of the Dairy Barn. Each of our cows produce between 16 L and 40 L of milk every day. In 2023, the museum shipped a total of 464,349 L of milk; that’s the equivalent of 1,528 bathtubs full of milk!
