Wearable Tech

Ongoing

From animal tagging and smartphones to spy cameras and concussion sensors, wearable tech can inform us, connect us, and help keep us safe.

Explore a remarkable range of inventions dating back to the nineteenth century, including footwear, protective goggles, gloves and headgear. Learn about the history of dentures, view braces and splints for every part of the body, and discover how far modern prosthetics have come.

Nor have animals been forgotten. See what it takes to outfit a search-and-rescue dog, and play with the patterns on tail lights for horses. Learn more about microchipping and tagging birds and animals, and see tiny red glasses for chickens, along with other tech for farm animals.

Celebrating the ingenuity of wearable tech, this exhibition may even inspire you to think up your own innovations.

Exhibition highlights

  • Find out how well you can keep up with a modern pacemaker without harming the wearer, and view one of the first external pacemakers
  • View a Newtsuit—a rigid diving suit with its own oxygen supply, allowing wearers to work at depths beyond the ability of conventional scuba divers
