Sound by Design

Ongoing

Discover some of the most important and exciting innovations in sound technology over the past 150 years.

Spin a massive disc to see how speed affects what we hear, or compose your own tune and play it back. Experience the stillness of the Quiet Cube or follow the development of audio equipment from radios and gramophones to headphones and iPods.

Whether you’re composing a new song or learning how we played music more than a century ago, you’re sure to gain a new appreciation for the role sound plays in our everyday lives.

  • Examine some of the world’s earliest electronic instruments, including the Electronic Sackbut—the world’s first synthesizer
  • Discover how your voice looks when sampled and analyzed by three different technologies
