Small Animal Barn

Ongoing

A favourite of families and small children, the Small Animal Barn is home to our sheep, goats, pigs and quails.

Meet the animals in the barn, or see our goats and sheep grazing in the nearby field during the summer months.

Included with museum admission

Sheep

Wonder at how delightfully soft a sheep’s fleece is! Try to figure out what colour a sheep’s wool would be from the markings on its skin. Meet delightfully different breeds of sheep in our barns, including Suffolk, Dorset and Rideau Arcott.

Goats

Our friendly and curious goats love meeting new visitors. Watch floppy-eared Nubian goats climb to the top of small platforms.

Pigs

Explore the barn to meet various breeds of pigs, including Duroc, Hampshire, Lacombe, Landrace, Tamworth and Yorkshire. Spot the favourite toys of these intelligent animals. If you’re lucky, you may be able to see pigs in every size from tiny newborn piglets to massive fully-grown boar and sows.

A small grey quail sits in the grass. The bird has grey feathers with beige and white striping.

Quails

Fun fact: Quail mature very quickly and are fully grown by eight weeks of age. Females can start laying anytime between six to eight weeks old! The museum is home to Coturnix quails, which come in a variety of colours. They lay the good quality speckled eggs.
