Horse and Cattle Barn

Ongoing

Our Horse and Cattle Barn is home to a delightful array of animals, including ducks, rabbits, donkeys, horses and beef cattle. Meet the animals in the barn, or see them spending time outdoors in the neighbouring paddock.

Over the winter months, many animals from the Poultry House call this barn home.

Horses

Say hello to a Hanoverian horse, retired from the RCMP Musical Ride. And, meet a national icon: the Canadian horse! This breed was first introduced in Canada when the King of France sent horses from his own stables to the people of his North American colony in 1665.

Beef cattle

Did you know: Canada is the fourth-largest beef and cattle exporter in the world, with over 60,000 cattle farms and ranches. At the museum, you’ll meet Mr. Everest, the Hereford bull who weighs approximately 2,000 lbs! You can also see various breeds of beef cattle, including Aberdeen Angus, Belted Galloways, Charolais, Shorthorn and Simmental. From January to April, you may be lucky enough to greet one of our newborn calves!

Donkeys

The museum is home to two Sicilian donkeys. Sicilian donkeys are known for the cross-shaped marking along their back, and with proper, lifelong care they can live to be 50 years old!

Alpacas

Alpacas are part of the camel family and are smaller cousins of the llama. Like sheep and angora goats, alpacas can be sheared for their fibre. Stop by the barn to meet our curious alpacas!
